The SETI Institute has been looking for extraterrestrial life for more than a decade now and with the advent of new more powerful searching instruments, the possibility of finding another civilization becomes more probable. This creates a new problem. How would we conduct a serious conversation with extra-terrestrial beings? The Institute has thrown the question out to the general public, encouraging people to respond through their website Earth Speaks. Since May 15th, responses have been coming in. As reported by the Chronicle of Higher Education, suggestions from users include “It’s about time!,” “No Vacancy,” and (… my personal favorite) “Hello! Please come pick me up, I’m a librarian, artist, and I prepare great Earth dishes.”
And so I ask you in all seriousness, what would you say?
