Just this week Trainers at the Information Literacy meeting in Alexandria, Egypt, have hatched a plan to propose creating an “Information Olympiad”. Dr. Abdul Khan, Assistant Director General for Communications & Information, UNESCO, has been asked to approach Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, with the idea. An “Information Skills Olympics” would draw attention to the world’s emerging knowledge society — a developing engine of world social and economic growth.
The participants believe such a set of intellectual games would at least parallel in importance and significance the traditional international sports Olympic games. Such an “Information Olympiad could be held, perhaps, on the opposing off years to the sports Olympics, beginning as early as 2014.
I find it very interesting that this idea arose during a workshop that was being held in Alexandria, Egypt, home of the world’s largest library of antiquity. If you have any ideas or suggestions for an Information Olympiad, please record them in the comments below and I will pass them on to the appropriate person.
